This program is designed to give the coffee professional a well grounded and fundamental education regarding green coffee, sensory analysis of coffee and brewing coffee. It lays the groundwork for a career in the coffee industry. Foundation for the coffee professional builds a vocabulary, both spoken and sensed, that will serve you well as you begin to build a career in coffee. Lectures and hands-on activities touch on varied subjects that impact coffee such as agronomy, earth sciences, economics, and sociology will bring to life the seed to cup journey as students explore the many steps along the global supply chain.

    Day 1

    SCA Green Coffee Foundation Certificate covering growing the coffee, processing, shipping, storage and arrival at a roastery.

    Green Buyer Foundation 

    Day 2

    SCA Sensory Foundation Certificate covering the essentials of sensory evaluation and how we perceive what we taste and how to apply this knowledge to coffee’s natural characteristics.

    Day 3

    SCA Brewing Foundation Certificate introducing the principles and tools of proper brewing from Batch, Immersion, Pour-Over, Pressure and Vacuum brewing methodologies.

    Classes at the Academy of Coffee Excellence generally run from 8:30 am to 5:30 pm unless otherwise noted.

    Lunch, morning coffee and snacks are provided each day.

    Practical and Written Exams take place in the afternoon of each day. There is a separate SCA registration, not included with this course, to take the Practical and Written Exams and upon passing, the Certificate Issuance. To register for this course's exams follow the Exam and Certificate Issuance Link.

    There are up to 2 certificates available for this coursework. You may select Foundation only and the quantity should reflect the number of days for which you have registered. Exam and Certificate Issuance Link.

    Immediately following this 3-Day Program as a separate registration is our in-depth 3-Day Diedrich Roaster Training Seminar. In the Diedrich Roaster Training Seminar you will roast and sensorially evaluate between 15 to 18 batches of coffee.
